Como senior Evonnie Wilson was named Youth of the Year by the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Twin Cities. Wilson accepted the honor and spoke at the clubs’ banquet, where she was recognized for years of leadership, and how “she helped elevate conversations around BIPOC identity and belonging.”
A post on the Boys & Girls Clubs social media about Wilson added, “Her commitment to closing disparities and serving her community reminds us exactly why Youth of the Year matters.” Wilson has been a proud and active member of the Mt. Airy Club throughout her time at Como. She plans to begin pursuing a medical degree at Augsburg University next fall.
Spencer stars at Children’s Theatre
Como senior Harriet Spencer is currently playing the lead role of Dorothy in the “Wizard of Oz” at the Children’s Theatre Company (CTC) in Minneapolis. Spencer will appear in 40 productions during the show’s run through June 14.
The spring has been intense for Spencer as she balances the exhilarating but exhausting acting on the nationally renowned stage while completing her college-level coursework and AP exams at Como.
Spencer played the prominent role of Max the dog in the last two seasons of “The Grinch” at CTC. She will be studying theater at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania next fall.
Robotics represented in Houston, Texas
Como sophomore Anna Peltier won the prestigious Leadership Award at the Northern Lights Robotics Regional held in Duluth. Peltier earned the honor of representing the Cougar BEASTBot team at the First Robotics World Championships in Houston, Texas.
As a team, BEASTBot won the Judge’s Award at the 10,000 Lakes Regional in Minneapolis. The award highlights a team’s unique efforts and performances, recognizing the positive attitude among team members and competitive interactions.
In robotics, alliances are formed and Como created successful partnerships, placing in the fifth alliance at both regional competitions. That resulted in a final standing of 48th place out of 184 teams in the state.
Engman-Phiri earns Athena Award
Como senior Robin Engman-Phiri was selected as the Cougars’ Athena Award winner for 2026. The Athena Award honors one female student-athlete from each metro area school culminating with a banquet in April to celebrate their excellence.
Engman-Phiri has been a standout golfer and soccer player during her high school career. She has earned six varsity letters in golf and has captained the Cougar team for the last two years, earning all-conference three times. She earned four varsity soccer letters, was a two-time all-conference selection, and was twice voted Como’s best defensive player.
Engman-Phiri achieved a weighted GPA of 4.07 and will attend St. Olaf College.
Como tennis takes conference title
For the first time since 2006, the Como boys tennis team won the St. Paul City Conference championship. The Cougars finished conference play with an undefeated record.
