The League of Women Voters St. Paul (LWVSP) is pleased to announce its upcoming May Learn with the League program, "Five Years Later -- The State of Anti-Racism and Global Protest Against Police Violence." This program will take place from 1-2 p.m. on Sunday, May 18, 2025, in-person at the Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center on the Macalester College campus (130 S Macalester St, St Paul).
The program will be a discussion between DeWitt Wallace Professor of History Walter Greason and League member Janiece Kirton. Social change is simultaneously slow and sudden. It can take years to generate participation, while a few seconds can change popular support. In March 2020, people responded to reports of a coronavirus that was deadly and contagious. When George Floyd and Breonna Taylor were killed by police a few weeks later, the entire world stood in unison for the Black Lives Matter movement. That moment created an enormous opportunity to create knowledge about critical race theory and diversity, equity, inclusion as an action plan across society. Join LWVSP for an exploration of new data on the movement and a history of social justice protest in Minnesota since 2020.
Parking is available on campus near the Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center. Although the meeting is in-person, there will be a virtual link shared closer to the date. If possible, the webinar will be rebroadcast through program partners, SCCTV and SPNN and hosted on the LWVSP YouTube channel 24 hours after the event.
